Sweden: The Immigration About-face

Immigration skeptics win big

We have chronicled Western Europe’s slow ethno-suicide for many years now (12 to be exact). The uncontested leader in the Great Replacement Olympics has long been Sweden.

A reminder of the flavor of modern Swedish multiculturalism:

Western European politicians and bureaucrats tend to be postmodern multiculturalists – in Sweden, fanatically so. They feel a contempt for their own civilization and they regard this contempt as a mark of sophistication and virtue. 

They are especially fond of cultures that share their own contempt for the West, and hence there is no culture for which they show more deference than that of Islam.

Every major event and holiday in Sweden — Christmas, Easter and Midsummer — is greeted with mocking newspaper articles and television programs informing Swedes that these traditional celebrations aren’t Swedish at all but foreign imports, and the cultureless Swedes don’t really have anything they can call their own. 

According to Fredrik Reinfeldt, ex-prime minister, “The original Swedish identity was just barbarism, and since then all progress has come from the outside.”

Alice Bah Kuhnke, the daughter of an immigrant from Gambia, recently appointed the Pakistani immigrant Qaisar Mahmood as chief of Sweden’s Cultural Heritage Archive. Mahmood has said he has never studied archeology or culture. [...] 

The soil of Sweden is full of Viking artifacts, and building projects have often provided a rich source of objects for museums, but ... In the new, modern and multicultural Sweden, Viking amulets, bracelets and other historical objects are not considered worth preserving, so they are sent to metal reclamation centers and melted down as scrap.

But in September the country did an abrupt about-face, turning its back on decades of open-borderism by voting en masse for a nationalist-right party for the first time in modern history.

What has happened? And is this the canary in the coal mine for her neighbors?

 

 

I. 1970s: From ethnostate to open bar

Today we think of Sweden as the most immigrant-friendly place on Earth, but it was not always so:

The geographically and culturally isolated Sweden was long one of the world’s most homogeneous countries. In 1940, only roughly 1% of Sweden’s population was born abroad, and not more than .01% born outside of Europe.

The immigrants that did arrive were largely other Scandinavians. Assimilation to Swedish culture was expected. In 1962 the leftist prime minister, Tage Erlander, said:

 ‘We Swedes live in an infinitely luckier situation. Our country’s population is homogeneous, not only in terms of race, but also in many other respects.’

Then suddenly, it all changed. A group of vocal immigrants began to publish op-eds pushing for multiculturalism and open borders:

In 1964 Sweden’s biggest and most influential daily Dagens Nyheter published the article ‘Utlänningsproblemet i Sverige’ ('The problem of foreigners in Sweden') by the Jewish refugee David Schwarz. With this article Schwarz became the first person to question the concept of assimilation in a prominent public forum in the postwar immigration era. ... Other immigrants joined Schwarz in his plea for recognition and tolerance of non-Swedish groups in Sweden.

In 1965 Schwarz introduced the term ‘the multicultural society’, which he embedded with notions of ethnocultural recognition, progress and societal harmony. The multicultural society was contrasted to the reactionary concept of assimilation and old-fashioned notions of Swedish homogeneity. Swedish assimilationism was, according to Schwarz and the other activists, an unfortunate product of Sweden’s insular history and it would have dire consequences if it was not eradicated and replaced by the new political ideal of the multicultural society, i.e. multiculturalism.

This propaganda campaign worked well, as by the 1970s the Swedes had decided to throw open the doors to multicultural immigration:

Sweden was the first European country where the idea of multiculturalism emerged in the political mainstream… On the 14th of May 1975, a unanimous Swedish parliament passed an act on a new immigrant and minority policy put forward by the social democratic government lead by Olof Palme, that explicitly rejected the ideal of ethno-cultural homogeneity and the policy of assimilation.

The policy aim was for minority groups in Sweden to retain their own languages and cultures. … The introduction of state-sponsored multiculturalism in 1975 constitutes the political crowning of Sweden’s multicultural moment: the revolutionary shift in the publicly affirmed ideals on ethnocultural diversity between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s.

What did this change in attitude do to Sweden’s demographics? As she threw open her borders to refugees from first Eastern Europe, then the four corners of the globe, her population began to shift:

II. The 2010s: The floodgates open

But after the Syrian war intensified and Angela Merkel declared in 2015 that Western Europe would take in anyone, from anywhere, for any reason, what had been a steady flow for decades turned into a flood.

2) Criminality

This flood of non-Western immigration has had dire consequences on once-peaceful Swedish society:

According to Dagens Nyheter in 2017, at least 90% of all gun-related murders and attempted murders in Sweden are committed either by immigrants or those with at least one immigrant parent, and according to Expressen, 94.5% of all members of career criminal gangs in Stockholm are either immigrants or have at least one immigrant parent. [Note that journalists are obliged to dig up this info, as the government does not share it with the public.]

In recent years, some [high-immigrant] areas have experienced riots, such as the 2008 Malmö mosque riots, 2010 Rinkeby riots, 2016 riots in Sweden and 2017 Rinkeby riots. Immigrants have also been associated with a series of highly publicised crimes, including the 2015 Ikea stabbing attack, 2016 Sweden asylum centre stabbing, and the 2017 Stockholm truck attack.

The open secret is that Sweden’s gang problem is 100% imported, led by Albanians, Turks, Syrians, Iranians, Iraqis, Bosniaks, and Africans:

As far as crime statistics go, certain ones are quite out-of-date. Why? Because the Swedish government’s reaction to public outcry over high immigrant crime stats was to simply… stop publishing them.

Statistics are hard to come by, but anecdotes most certainly are not.

Afghans

Unlike most of the economic migrants disguised as ‘refugees’ these last several years, Afghans really are fleeing a country locked in a bloody civil war. Here is how a number of them have thanked their Swedish protectors:

 

Sweden: A 51-year-old Afghan refugee raped an 11-year-old Swedish girl at a public pool in Goteborg. He was sentenced to 2.5 years prison but will not be deported.

Sweden: The Afghan pedophile, “Soltan,” who had previously been convicted of sexual assault against six girls in a water park, was sentenced in February to a short prison sentence and deportation for raping a woman on a nightclub dance floor. He grabbed her and penetrated her digitally against her will.

 

Sweden: An Afghan man who arrived in the country in 2015 and already has a long rap sheet has been charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl. His asylum claim has been rejected and he is to be deported.

 

Sweden: A group of twenty-year-old Afghan refugees were charged with filming their rapes of high school girls in Västra Götaland, then using the videos to blackmail the girls into further sexual relations.

Sweden: A 70-year-old pro-migrant activist has been murdered by her young protégé, a 20-year-old Afghan with whom she had been carrying on a romantic relationship. He has confessed to strangling her to death in her home.

Sweden : A young Afghan asylum-seeker attacked seven perfect strangers in the town of Vetlanda with a knife, attempting to kill them. He claims to have overheard someone (not one of his victims) say “God doesn’t exist,” which offended him so strongly he had no choice but to perpetrate a massacre. Syrians, who like Afghans have been fleeing legitimate war, have also done all they can to beef up the Swedish crime blotter:

Special dishonorable mention goes to Somalians, who have managed to pass themselves off as war refugees whilst raping and murdering their way through Sweden like a knife through butter:

A common theme among these news stories, and the thousands of others we did not have space for here, is not only the wanton brutality of the 'refugees' but the excessive leniency of the Swedish legal system.

Sweden has crafted a judicial system for mild-mannered, civic-spirited Swedes. It is often powerless in the face of outsiders who share none of the natives' moral codes or beliefs about what constitutes civilized behavior.

III. 2022: The Backlash

Then in 2022, seven years into Merkel’s Million Muslim March and its attendant crime wave, a strange thing happened in the land of the midnight sun.

The most left-wing society on Planet Earth suddenly came down with a case of the rights:

The conservative coalition--of which the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats are the leading party--has just taken control of Parliament:

But it's not simply that right-wing parties have won a squeaker election and barely taken over Parliament. It's that all major parties, heretofore open-borders zealots, have been forced to do a sharp 180 on immigration. Tino Sanandaji, an Iranian-Swedish economist, gives his analysis of the election electroshock:

Why has the anti-immigration party, the Sweden Democrats (classified “far right”), gone from zero to almost a fifth of the votes in its twenty years of existence?

Public opinion in Sweden has long favored limiting refugee immigration. Polls have showed that only 20% to 25% of ordinary Swedes want to let in more migrant refugees. But among the elite—MPs and journalists--that number is 70% to 80%.

 

But now, growing public anger over the issue has forced the country's political elites to bend to the wishes of the electorate. Thus, both the establishment right and left have done a complete flip-flop on immigration. Sweden is a consensus society: while almost the entire political spectrum was in favor of open borders in 2015 or 2016, those very same parties in 2022 all claim to want to slam the borders shut.

How did we get here? During the period 1985-2015, asylum immigration to Sweden was around four times higher per capita than to other Western European countries, so that the share of non-Westerners rose from 2% to 20% of the population in 2022. The country’s rulers always believed that the superior Swedish social safety net would prevent the immigrant problems seen in the rest of Europe. The facts proved them wrong--but it took a very long time to admit. In current surveys, less than 10% of the public believe integration of immigrants has been a success.

Perhaps most surprising of all, the demographic that votes the most reliably to the left everywhere in the world--the 18- to 21-year-olds--did anything but:

The results show that a whopping 64% of this youngest demographic voted for right-aligned parties.

Sweden also traditionally holds mock elections in its nation’s middle schools and high schools. The results left the media just as flabbergasted:

That is, nearly 70% of the nation’s teens, had they been able to vote, would have voted for right-aligned parties.

 

The impossible has happened: The Swedish electoral tide has well and truly turned.

Sweden has long reminded us of a middle-aged woman in a happy marriage… a little too happy. She has everything she could possibly want. Her life is comfortable, peaceful, predictable. She’s gotten a little bored. 

So she decides to have a fling with the swaggering young foreign gardener--only to end up stabbed to death in a dumpster.

 

Incredibly, however, it would appear she has come to her senses in extremis, just before the final act.

 

Will other European countries follow her lead?
