NAM-rich. Meaning that for some time our cultural-genetic stock has had a large component which would not handle wealth well. As this component started getting wealth, the problems started simmering, and the sudden wealth infusion of the fifties lead to the boiling-over of dysfunction in the sixties. (Unchecked immigration obviously doesn't help.) Katt Williams is relevant here:

Being broke is a good thing. It’s protection. It’s protection from all the [deleterious things] you thought about doing when you were [inebriated]. Look at Michael Jackson. He had too much money. You think he’d have that face if he was broke?

Regarding trickle-down decadence: I would bet that the elite were initially meritorious, but eventually started accumulating members who belonged by birth but not by cultural-genetic caliber. So long as the noble elite greatly outnumbered the ignoble elite, the former could keep the latter yoked. But, eventually, a tipping point was reached. I think this coincided with the aforementioned phenomenon of "too rich to handle it" which is why the sixties seemed like such a complete top-down revolt. (But this remains to be empirically verified.) High caliber people still exist, but they are now a cowed minority, in a sense - as Charles Murray noted in "Coming Apart," they no longer "preach what they practice."Menckenhttp://bmorebachelor.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-55896543871992186972012-11-09T05:22:35.838+01:002012-11-09T05:22:35.838+01:00My recent post follows up on this, in a fashion:

I've always felt that looking back through the whole of Western history, that massive trickle-down of wealth of the 1950s and 1960s is the most unprecedented event. But it's too soon to really have perspective on the depth of the changes it's caused. You also made me think of the Juvenal quote posted earlier:

'But now we are suffering from the evils of a long peace. Luxury, more ruthless than war, broods over Rome and takes revenge for the world she has conquered.'M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-45457287266186503192012-07-24T04:43:17.749+02:002012-07-24T04:43:17.749+02:00"Unamused said...

I think it comes partly from the fact that the 1960s were such a seismic shift, so the era just beforehand has taken on a sort of mythical golden cast. Also, "history is linear" is a Western notion that we absorb without quite realizing it. History really isn't linear, it goes through phases more and less religious, more and less prosperous, more and less conservative. I don't really grasp the big picture, but it does seem clear some of the rot we're witnessing has deep roots.M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-56511475573869320822012-07-21T19:35:36.519+02:002012-07-21T19:35:36.519+02:00Unamused--
