Just to raise a point of fact, Lazar Kag...@Arturo,

Just to raise a point of fact, Lazar Kaganovich was not Stalin's brother-in-law. There were unsubstantiated rumors that Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva (aka Lana Peters), married Kaganovich's purported son. However, Alliluyeva denied that such a marriage ever took place in her memoirs. Her first husband, Grigory Morozov, was Jewish, but he was just a fellow student at Moscow University and not from a family of the nomenklatura. Stalin hated him and never condescended to meet him, although he did permit the marriage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-77483347801844198552012-08-08T22:33:22.168+02:002012-08-08T22:33:22.168+02:00Hesperado--

The U.S. doesn't care who's in charge over there, religious or secular, as long as that person's protecting U.S. interests. (We supported secular Reza Pahlavi in Iran but jihadists in Afghanistan, and of course we loved secular S. Hussein until we decided we didn't.)

Somewhat like dealing with Russian Orthodox and Prussian Protestant occupation drove the Poles ever deeper into their Catholic faith with a nationalist bent, I think many Arab/Muslim peoples have used anti-Westernism as a rallying cry for Islamic theocracy. But in the absence of Russians / Prussians the Poles would still be fervent Catholics, and without Western meddling many Arab/Muslim peoples today would still be embracing fundamentalism.M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-74732985607182947212012-08-07T05:57:19.293+02:002012-08-07T05:57:19.293+02:00I notice the blogger intersperses commentary among...I notice the blogger intersperses commentary among some of the listed explanations, but not with #3 ("The geopolitical explanation"). Good to hear from you. I've been foll...Artur--

Good to hear from you. I've been following the 'Pussy Riot' case, it's strange to watch the evolution of church and state power in Russia since the end of the USSR.
I got this quote from a Guardian article: (Vsevolod Chaplin is the Orthodox spokes-priest)

A strong source of opposition in Soviet times, the church has collaborated closely with, and benefited handsomely from, Putin's regime. It is now believed to be one of the main landowners in Russia.

Chaplin praised the growing closeness between church and state. "For the Orthodox believer, like for Muslims, of course the authorities and the church are understood as one thing," he said. "Our ideal is the unity of the church and the authorities, and unity of the people and the authorities."

"In this way, we are decidedly different from the west. I think attempts in the west to separate the spiritual sphere and secular sphere is a historical mistake," Chaplin said. "Such a division is not characteristic to any civilisation except the west."

He denied the existence of corruption in the highest ranks of the Russian government and only criticised the authorities for one thing: not "speaking loudly enough" about western involvement in the growing opposition movement in Russia.

"The west gives its support to divide the people of Russia," Chaplin said. "The west has to finally understand that we are different from western society, with its governmental, political and holy structures. The quicker they understand it, the better."

I couldn't agree more with that last part, by the way. I've written about it before.

To hyperlink, do this (this is to make a hyperlink to your blog that says "my blog"):

< a href = " my blog " > http://crimesofthetimes.blogspot.com < / a >

But remove every space (except the space between the 'a' and the 'href') (oh, and leave the space between 'my' and 'blog')

When you preview your comment, it should end up looking like this:

my blog

Hope that's clear.M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-41619795528160767252012-08-02T11:31:37.796+02:002012-08-02T11:31:37.796+02:00I will be forming a student group based on your we...I will be forming a student group based on your website.
The group will be called "Cerebrate Diversity!"
Our motto will be "Human Biodiversity for Humane, Sensible Public Policy"

The entire basis of economic theory and social theory needs to be completely rewritten as a result of information on this blog.

"Could it be possible? Fascinating and incredibly timely and relevant.

I was wondering, did you see this amazing story about the new science prize, funded by a RUssian billionaire? It is the world's most valuable science prize, at three million dollars :

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/31/science/9-scientists-win-yuri-milners-fundamental-physics-prize.html

This part of the article is funny :

"He [Russian billionaire Yuri Milner] declined to explain in detail how he selected which accomplishments to honor or why all of the winners are men. “I truly see this as a start,” Mr. Milner said. “Going forward, it’s going to be up to the committee to make those considerations.”

This Times article appeared on the same page as an article about the trial of Russia's "Pussy Riot." What's interesting here MG is that these girls petformed their stunt on the altar of that giant cathedra; in Moscow, the one that was rebuilt in the 90s after being destroyed by YKW in 1931. Check this from Forbidden History (source = http://www.tomatobubble.com/id109.html) :

"The 340 ft. tall Cathedral of Christ the Saviour Church is the grandest Ordodox Christian Church in the world. Completed in 1883, it had taken nearly 20 years to build, and another 20 years to decoratively paint its marble, granite, and gold plated interior.
.
After Lenin's death, the Christian-hating Soviets chose the location of the Cathedral to be the site of a monument to Lenin & Communism, known as the Palace of the Soviets. On December 5, 1931, by order of Stalin's Jewish minister and brother-in-law, Lazar Kaganovich, the Cathedral is dynamited and reduced to rubble (Video). Jewish Reds watch and laugh as horrified Christians grieve in silence over the cruel destruction of their religious, and cultural icon.
.
Ironically, due to poor planning and lack of funds, the Palace of the Soviets never materializes. The site is turned into a huge swimming pool instead.
.
In 1990, the Russian Orthodox Church receives permission, from what is by then a more open Government, to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Though the interior is not as elaborate as the original, the massive new Cathedral is still a very impressive structure."

Hey how do you hyperlink in the comments section (so I don't have to past full URLs?).

Best,

- ArturoArturhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12411800265189549526noreply@blogger.com
