Not so. At the risk of sounding glib and tautological I will assert that if most homeless people wanted to live like normal people and according to societie's expectations and norms then most would be living in some sort of home. As a former chronically homeless person I can tell you that you make the classic mistake of assuming that homeless people desire to live as you do and value the same things you do. I can assure you very confidently most ABSOLUTELY DO NOT. For the most part they have an entirely different, highly antisocial, set of values that set them in opposition with the rest of society. Also homelessness tends to be the visible portion at the very tail end of a lifetime of trade offs and decisions by an individual which show that person consistently prioritizing something OTHER than stability, employment, sobriety, a proof, etc. Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12835725697973043616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-12226814371051050312014-12-23T00:37:36.432+01:002014-12-23T00:37:36.432+01:00This has got to stop now!! this hiding behind- not...This has got to stop now!! this hiding behind- notions that the present population cannot be made responsible for the actions of their ancestors, while those of the enslaved continue to suffer the consequences- while the slavers inheritors continue to benefit from the misery of others. And what did they do? Wreck their own countries. Even Tanzania and Kenya, which were better prepared and better led for independence, are headed towards failed state status. This would be a truly complex calculation though, well outside my capacities.

if we were really interested in "reparations," then worthies like Coates would be deported to the African country of their choice

This is, to me, the strongest indictment of them. Yes, I'm aware there were a lot of freedmen running riot after Emancipation, but first-hand testimony shows that there was also a sub-set of southern Whites who were seemingly traumatized by the end of slavery. Their identity had become so tied up in it that the sight of free Blacks tranquilly living their lives, in some cases earning a good living, apparently sent them around the bend. This sub-set of Euros committed hair-raising atrocities against peaceful, hard-working Afros (living the very lives Southerners said they wanted Afros to live). It's the point from Coates that I feel has the most merit. I think I'll come back to it later, though, because I do need a break from this topic.M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-37477840304482555982014-10-14T09:22:36.364+02:002014-10-14T09:22:36.364+02:00"Reparations" for slavery needs to be se..."Reparations" for slavery needs to be seen for what it really is: one more racket in a long history of race rackets. The advocates for "reparations" could care less about the facts. "Reparations" is one more way to hustle white people. These rackets will go on until YT stands up and say, "Enough!"

Let's take this a step further. If "reparations" are to be paid for slavery, then should this apply to:
* Muslims who enslaved Africans, Europeans, Hindus, etc?
* Native Americans who practiced not only slavery but some really cruel activities against their prisoners?
* Africans themselves who engaged in the slave trade?
* Communists, whose gulags enslaved tens of millions of people?
* How about American blacks, whose demands have created involuntary servitude for whites who are forced to pay for the welfare state?

Come to think about it, how about if blacks pay "reparations" for wrecking every major city they have gained control of, starting with Detroit. Or for all the crime they have committed out of proportion to their numbers? Or the demands they have placed on the welfare and school systems to accommodate their dysfunctions? Or the Long Hot Summer riots of the 1960s--which continue through to today's Fergusons? How about blacks in South Africa paying reparations for all the necklacings, farm attacks and torture-murders they revel in? Or blacks in any number of European countries paying reparations for their burning neighborhoods and crossing illegally into YT's lands from Africa?

What the demands for "reparations" (per the Atlantic article) indicates is that black politics can never be anything more than a glorified exercise in extortion. If one were to make a case that it is impossible to assimilate blacks into civil society, this would be Item #1.

Come to think of it, if we were really interested in "reparations," then worthies like Coates would be deported to the African country of their choice--though come to think of it, I wouldn't want to wish such a racketeer on even a Bob Mugabe.Californiannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-43240316008449718662014-10-11T14:52:24.270+02:002014-10-11T14:52:24.270+02:00MG,

Your guess of 'low single digits' is, I think, an overestimation. If one looks at just New World slavery alone, the answer is 'low single digits'--6%, in fact. (I didn't include that graph in the original post, mea culpa, I've now added it.)

As for world slavery throughout history, consider this: Total Africans taken out of the continent by Arabs is pegged at 12 million, with those taken by Europeans also estimated at around 12 million. Add these two together and you don't even have the number of slaves thought to exist on the planet today (just shy of 30 million).

If we look back at the many hundreds of millions no doubt enslaved since we first began coercing each other into labor millennia ago, I think the approximately 600,000 Africans brought to N. The U.K.'s 'chav' class is one famous example. But it does seem U.S. Afros have been exceptionally seduced by this type of offer, and the data lines up with that. It would be easy enough for white women to be single mothers on the gov't dole like so many black women, and some choose to do so, but far more don't when we compare against blacks. That more than anything shows the value of a typical white husband/father vs. a black one.

Without the necessity for a husband's paycheck to survive, many black women are basically making the sensible choice of not wanting themselves or their kids to be around black men, and their rampant rates of criminality, violence, absentee fatherism, etc.Jason C.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740067042613887004.post-76217092141103921102014-10-04T06:00:48.756+02:002014-10-04T06:00:48.756+02:00"What about Somali ''refugees'..."What about Somali ''refugees'' in Minnesota? He says red-lining sapped Blacks' ability to build wealth, but the actual data shows this group saves less, spends more, pays their bills less, and even defaults on loans more than other ethnic groups with identical credit scores. The data's all there, it's really the elephant in the room for those who try to argue past injustices have magically pushed Afros into shoddy financial habits today.

As far as your points on the practicality question, they're well-taken. I stuck with the conceptual side here--'can it be defended even in theory?'--because if it can, there's always a way to work out the details. I think various Indian tribes have gotten payouts too, they reckon by some % of Indian blood proven by tribal records.

The even larger point, to me, is that the whole thing smells like a cash-grab by a malfunctioning group who has run out of excuses. The further we get from slavery, the more dysfunctional they become. I believe this is deeply embarassing for them at some level, and massive AA isn't the magic fairy dust they'd hoped, hence the sudden fixation on a 200-year-old bogeyman.M.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06817230141673953233noreply@blogger.com
